Curated by Rosby’s Kay Norton-Knight for the internationally acclaimed Rosby Gallery – Julia Roche and Michael Ferris present original bodies of work that find common ground exploring territory that is familiar, ancestral and significant.
Elevating their existences into forms both painted and sculptured, Roche and Ferris engage with their rural environments with a difference of technique and medium that melds into a cohesive and combined selection of works.
Roche, based in the Riverina, explores collective memory, often painting in the dark. Drawing on senses beyond sight, she brings forward memories of her own and those learned on Wiradjuri Country.
Wandering that same Country, on the edges of Mudgee, Ferris picks up clues from fallen flora. Playful and spiritual, his sculptures becomes instruments of interpretation and connection, inviting us along for the journey.
Drawing on their memories, and exploring beyond the past they both knew – these collective bodies of work represent a new frontier and approach to regional Australia art. Gathering the past to contribute to the future.
